Chandrika (Juhi Chawla) is currently filming a documentary about three death row convicts. Wracked with conflicting feelings about the subject of her movie, Chandrika plumbs the psyches of the three inmates (Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah and the director Nagesh Kuknoor). But what she doesn't reveal is that she knows more about them than they can possibly imagine.

I am not a big fan of Bollywood films so to be honest I went into this with rather low expectations and without reading a lot about the film. I am not sure if the way I approached the film helped in the result or not but I got to say this was nothing short of a masterpiece. There are many reasons why this is so good, one is that the script is brilliant, the story is slow and deliberate and leads up to not only a shocking ending that you would never expect but it is also an awesome ending as well. One reason I never cared for Bollywood films are the songs they put in their movies but I was surprised to find that this film had no songs at all which I thing was a good idea for a prison film such as this one. The story is about three men accused and sentenced for murder. they Become involved with a female who is working on a prison documentary about the three men. To give away too much of the story here would be a mistake but I can tell you that the film is riveting and at times gruesome and it has you at the edge of your seat guessing how it is going to end. I suppose you could compare this to "The Shawshank Redemption" and it some ways that would be fair but don't think for a minute that this is a rip-off, 3 Deewarein/3 Walls stands on it's own because the writing is amazing, the acting is fantastic and the tension level is at an all time high. I cannot recommend seeing this film enough, this is what good cinema is all about and to miss out on seeing this one would be too bad. Forget where this film was made because this is a human drama that has you hooked from it's opening scenes and it never lets you go till the end. Finally a smart and intense adult film that will leave you wondering why this never got more attention. Do yourself a favor and seek this one out, the film is presented in it's original Hindi language with English subtitles and the DVD contains no extras but the film itself is worth every penny.
