Everything seems unfamiliar for suddenly single dad Gary Brooks (Jay Mohr) as he tries to navigate his increasingly complex life. A painting contractor, Gary is doing the best he can to share the upbringing of his 14-year-old son Tom (Ryan Malgarini) and 11-year-old daughter Louise (Kathryn Newton) with ex-wife Allison (Paula Marshall). Just as he’s trying to figure the etiquette involved in informing his ex of his gorgeous new girlfriend Vanessa (Jaime King), Allison drops a major bombshell on him—she’s engaged to their marriage counselor! Kids, romance and his ex-wife’s controlling ways keep Gary guessing as he gets used to his strange and uproarious new world.

I have to admit I never seen this on Television so you can imagine how surprised and happy I was to finally see a sitcom that is both cleverly written and very funny. Besides being well-written the show also benefits from a great cast including Joy Mohr who I have always been a fan of no matter what it was in, also Paula Marshall is terrific as the ex-wife. Paula really brings the needed charm to the show. In a time when it seems all we see on TV is reality shows it is nice to see there is still some very good sitcoms out there to watch. If you seen the show you already know how good it is but if you haven't now is a good time to get caught up as Season One is finally on DVD. The three-disc set contains every Season One episode plus never-before-seen bonus features including a behind-the-scenes visit with the show’s executive producer, James Burrows (“Taxi,” “Cheers,” “Friends”). Lets hope this one runs for years to come and provides us with a lot more laughs along the way. This makes a great addition to your DVD collection.
