Inspired by true events, this penetrating drama centers on Dee Roberts (Nicole Beharie), a 24-year-old mother of four who's forced to take on a corrupt district attorney (Michael O'Keefe) when she's unjustly prosecuted in a large-scale drug case.
The Story of Dee Roberts drug arrest in Melody, Texas in 2000 is one many people never knew about but it is an important story that has finally been told so that everyone can witness the injustices that go on today in our world. Texas at the time had a drug task force that performed raids in order to catch drug dealers mainly in the minority housing projects but the only problem was that many of the people that were picked up never did anything wrong. Dee Roberts is one of those people among many I am sure that got caught up in a corrupt system. There is a lot to think about here including racial profiling,abuse of political positions, use of drug task forces in our country and many more issues. I will not get too deep into what happens so not to spoil the film but this is a powerful drama that delivers on every level possible. Director Tim Disney did a terrific job keeping the film moving at a great pace while still providing all the suspense needed to keep the film interesting. The cast of a film such as this is very important because this is a character driven movie and the actors picked for this were perfect choices. Alfre Woodard is one of the finest actresses working today and she shines in the role as Dee's mother. Nicole Beharie is amazing as Dee, it is hard to believe that this was her first role and I certainly look forward to seeing a lot more of her in the future. The rest of the cast were all just was impressive including, Will Patton,Michael O'Keefe and Tim Blake Nelson to name a few. Every so often there is a film that is so captivating and touching that you can't take your eyes off it, American Violet is one of those movies. It tells an important story in a realistic way while being entertaining at the same time. If your a fan of fact-based cinema or drama in general I suggest picking this up today, there is a lot of lessons we can all learn from this plus it opens more eyes to a problem I am sure exists today in certain areas of our country and even our world. American Violet is one of the 2008's best films and one that is complex,riveting and entertaining all at the same time.
