French director Catherine Breillat serves up an inspired take on Charles Perrault's 17th-century fairy tale about a murderous nobleman whose wives have been disappearing in droves in this fantastical foreign-language drama partially set in the 1950s.
Catherine Breillat gives this new retelling of the classic tale a feminist touch and it works very well here. This twisted and darkly humorous retelling is not going to be for everyone but for those of you that might of seen other films about King Blue Beard you are going to want to check this one out as well. I really liked the look here, the film captured the tale perfectly with it's settings and costumes and the acting I thought was very good and natural. I also liked the way the way the Director kept reminding us that this is indeed just a tale by cutting back to the 1950s attic where two younger sisters read from the fairy tale as they discuss the meaning of love and marriage. Certainly more for the "Art-house" crowd but Bluebeard will also appeal to anyone that is just looking for something inventive and different to watch. Bluebeard certainly made an impression on me in both production and the way Director, Catherine Breillat gave the tale her own touch, keeping with the story but making it different enough to be original. One thing to remember is that this is an adult film filled with adult themes including violence. I enjoyed this and everything it brought with it, the cast I thought did a fantastic job at playing their characters including the two young female actors. The film is presented in it's French language with English Subtitles but don't let that stop you for picking this one out.
