Nick Cole, a straight-to-video horror director who is kidnapped by, Laney, an over zealous fan, determined to impress him with her own film project. The situation goes from bad to worse when Cole realizes that the murders in Laney's film are real, and that the victims are all people from his own dark past.
First off let me thank both Writer/Director, Edward Romero and Director of Photography, Elias Matar for considering me and sending the screener out so quickly. The film was shot in 10 days on a micro-budget with F&F (friends & family) funding. but don't let that fool you it looks and plays like a film with a much bigger budget. As the story opens you see a young girl in her bra and panties posing in front of a web cam, it quickly jumps to what looks like a storage room where Nick is tied to a chair and Laney is getting ready to show him her work, a series of snuff films. You sense right away that Laney has other motives and that there are more secrets yet to be revealed but the story takes it's time as it slowly draws you into Laney's world of the macabre. Writer/Director, Edward E. Romero is no stranger to film making but "Butterfly" is his time behind the camera of his own feature film but you can tell he has used his past experiences well and the production looks like it's from a seasoned veteran with a much higher budget to work with. The photography is awesome but I expected it to be since Elias Mater was in charge, if you have seen his film "Ashes" you know what I mean and if you haven't then you owe it to yourself to check it out. "Butterfly" is a edge of your seat Horror/Thriller with tense, well written dialogue. The story is simple but cleverly written with some twists along the way that slowly pulls you in and to the edge of your seat. A disturbing and shocking film that pulls no punches and it has a shocking climax that is sure to please all fans of the genre. The cast all did a terrific job but the film belongs to it's two main leads, Mandi Kreisher as Laney is terrific, a talented young actress who gives an amazing performance here and Jay Laisne as Nick is equally impressive, the two play off each other perfectly and have great chemistry together.
"Butterfly" is an Official Selection at both the "Image Gazer Film Festival" and the "Fear Fiesta Film Festival." The film is starting a series of midnight screenings at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in Los Angels starting June 24th so if you're in the area I highly recommend checking it out, you will thank me later. "Butterfly" is impressive in more ways than one, it's an effective horror/thriller that draws it's audience in and doesn't let go till the credits begin to roll. Writer/Director, Edward Romero is a talented new filmmaker and one to keep an eye out for, this is the kind of talent Hollywood should be backing. "Butterfly" delivers on mahem and thrills in an exciting and entertaining way.
