Sticky and hot from the long drive to visit a relative at their newly acquired, remote, rural farmhouse, Sam and Jason, a young couple on vacation, decide to swim in a pond they find at the end of a freshly cut path. While swimming, Jason is bitten by a strange leech-like organism. When he attempts to remove the creature, part of it rips off and crawls inside his leg. Back at the house, Sam's sister and her family have yet to return. As time progresses, the injury on Jason's leg worsens into a rapidly spreading infection, and strange clues begin to reveal that there may be more to their host's absence than it previously appeared. It soon becomes a race against time to discover what happened to Sam's sister and her family and what lies in store for Jason, faced with his physical and emotional disintegration.
Something is in the water in Director David Doucette's debut feature film "From Beneath." While on vacation with his girlfriend, Sam Jason is bit by a leech looking parasite while swimming in a pond and when he tries to knock it off himself a part of it goes inside his skin. Once their back in the cabin Jason's condition gets worse and not they must find out what the strange organism was and they need to find a way out so they can get help.
"From Beneath" wastes no time in getting started, the opening scene shows a bloody man carrying a woman's body to a pond and dumping her in and then walking in himself. This really sets the stage for what's to come. The scene quickly shifts to Jack and Sam driving in a car to a farmhouse her relative just got. This quick set-up allows the audience to get to know Jack and Sam before the true horror really begins, it's short and to the point and it allows you to have some feelings towards the two for later in the film. I'm not going to go into details about what happens in the film but I can tell you it has that 70's feel to it, it reminded me of the films that use to scare you without all the gore or cheap jump scares. Director, David Doucette really does an impressive job in his debut making the most out of what he has to work with, He creates a high level of atmosphere and suspense and the score really brought an extra dose as far as the atmosphere goes, his talents are on full display here and I look forward to what he does next. The cast including the leads, Lauren Watson and Jamie Temple did a terrific job at giving realistic performances.
The film is a slow burn but it's never boring. There's not much in the way of action or even gore but there doesn't have to be.
"From Beneath" is a film that gets under your skin and in your head and it stays there till the shocking climax. This is another example of not needing a huge budget to create a truly frightening film, all it takes is a great story, solid direction and a fnatastic cast all of which "From Beneath" has. This is a Indie lover's dream, a movie that grabs your attention right from the start and it doesn't let you go till the credits begin to roll. I will keep this review short cause I don't want to ruin the movie for those waiting to see it when it comes to DVD on October 23rd. So be sure to mark the date down and do not miss out on seeing this very effective horror film from a Director with loads of talent.
