Roy (Foster) is a heavy-drinking criminal enforcer and mob hit man whose boss set him up in a double-cross scheme. After killing his would-be assassins before they could kill him, Roy discovers Rocky (Fanning), a young woman being held captive, and reluctantly takes her with him on his escape. Determined to find safety and sanctuary in Galveston, Roy must find a way to stop his boss from pursuing them while trying to outrun the demons from his and Rocky’s pasts.

'Galveston' tells the story of Roy, a criminal who works for a mob boss doing his dirty work. One day while being sent out on a heist he is set-up but he manages to kill the thugs and escape. While leaving he sees a young woman tied to a chair. Her name is Rocky and she was being held against her will. Roy decides against his better judgement to take her with him as he gets out of town. Along the way Rocky tells him she needs to make a stop to get some money but instead returns with a little girl she says is her sister. All three set out to escape the mob while he figures out how to stop them from following him and what his plans might be after that. Roy also has another problem, he is dying of cancer and he wants to make things right with Rocky before he dies.

'Galveston' is a film noir crime story that centers on two strangers who meet when their lives accidentally cross paths. Both have pasts they are not proud of and are trying to escape. Roy is a lot older than the young Rocky but as the film moves a long they form a bound and a love for each other. Rocky gets Roy to live life a little but it seems like their fate has been written long ago.

This is a crime film that got my attention right from the start. The story isn't really anything new but the execution and the attention to detail makes it a worthwhile watch. Credit a lot of the film's success to Director, Mélanie Laurent who delivers a realistic and thought-provoking story. Don't expect anything joyful here because this is not a feel good story even though there are small glimmers of hope a long the way.

Another thing that made the film so good was the cast, Ben Foster is a force as Roy and Elle Fanning gives a heart felt performance and her beauty really shines through in every scene she is in. She really opened my eyes to just how good an actress she is. I will be following her career from now on. The supporting cast all did an excellent job in the film as well including Beau Bridges who plays the mob boss.

'Galveston' is a moody crime film that moves at a slow but deliberate pace. The main characters are well developed and the film looks beautiful while being gritty. This is the kind of film that leaves you thinking long after it is over. It is a compelling and engaging film that reminded me why I fell in love with cinema in the first place. Good story line and characters you care about makes this a gem. 'Galveston' opens in theaters and On Demand / Digital HD on October 19, 2018 so be sure to check it out.
