It's the age-old story of forbidden love between feuding families, but Shakespeare's classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet becomes quite a comedy when the young lovers in question are different-colored gnomes from backyards on opposite sides of a tall wooden fence. I wasn't expecting much from this new Disney film from the director of Shrek 2 but to my surprise it was much better than I expected. A story all us adults know already but this is a nice spin on it, the kids will find it to be very funny and I think there's enough adult humor in it to please most of the parents out there as well. Each gnome had their own personality and all the characters were cleverly written which was something I never expected. We all know the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet ends in tragedy but of course this has a happy ending, Gnomeo and Juliet show both their families that the blues and the reds could indeed live as one instead of constantly fighting. Gnomeo & Juliet may not be the best Disney animation ever but it's solid entertainment for the entire family which is something we can never have enough of. If there was one thing I felt was a negative about the film I think it would be that ending seems a bit rushed, but other than that I enjoyed the film. Executive producer Elton John's musical score is an effective blend of classic and original songs, including a new collaboration with Lady Gaga called "Hello, Hello." The film sports an incredible cast of voice actors as well including, James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Jim Cummings and Michael Caine to name a few.
