Grace was a major hit at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, it is too bad the film never got a major theatrical release because compared to the horror films released nowadays I found this to be far more superior. This a hard film to fit into any one genre, it is horror but not in the traditional sense. What I mean by that is I never once found myself scared, this isn't a slasher flick or some supernatural ghost story. Grace is more a disturbing horror/drama about a mother that has a undying love for her newborn, something any mother can relate to. The film is slow going so some might get bored early on but if you hang in there you will find it to be one of the best, original horror flicks to come along in awhile. The debut of writer/director Paul Sole, finds him in great form, setting a nice unsettling pace that gets under your skin, I look forward to more work in the future from this great talent. After getting pregnant Madeline and her husband get in a car accident which kills both her baby and husband. The trauma takes it's toll on Madeline and she decides to carry the baby to term which alone is a little creepy. Things take a stranger turn when the baby is born healthy and alive but what seems normal soon turns into something much more than that. It seems Grace doesn't care for breast milk very much and instead craves human blood. The film just gets more disturbing as it moves along as Madeline decides that her motherly duties are what matters most. A refreshing take on the genre, a film that pushes the limit on uncomfortable, it is slow but that is the intention of the Director and I can tell as the film moves along there are many chilling moments. The cast was very good but the film belongs to Jordan Ladd who plays Madeline, this is the most demanding film she has been in as far as acting goes and she really delivers. Like I said before this is not a horror film in the traditional sense, it is more a psychological thriller that terrifies that is just so wrong it's right. An edge of your seat thriller that will have you thinking about it long after it is over. I got to say I don't think I have seen a film like this before, sure there has been other movies that deal with babies like, "It's Alive" but Grace is nothing like it and is far more disturbing in nature. If your looking for something different then I suggest picking this up, it is a well-written, clever and highly entertaining flick that just might have you feeling a little faint, check out this unique horror flick. Also I think it is noteworthy to mention that the film was Produced by Adam Green(Hatchet,Spiral), one of the best young film-makers today.
