Gathered one summer in a beautiful shoreline town, three generations are drawn together by their patriarch, played by Oscar® Nominee Robert Loggia. With endearing moments of humor and uplifting spirit, HARVEST is a portrait of a family awkwardly yet delicately hanging on to what was, what now is, and to one another.
Set one summer at a beautiful home on the Northeastern shoreline , the drama follows three generations who gather around their patriarch, who has cancer, while his wife suffers from dementia. Their daughter Anna a divorced woman, cares for her parents in their home, where she still serves as mother to her college-age son, Josh who has come home for the summer. "Harvest" has it's quirky moments to keep things from getting too heavy and down but it's also a sensitive and appealing film we can all relate to in one way or another. During this particular summer the family gets together but tensions and past issues arise between several members, betrayal and resentment seem to be lurking just below the surface here but it's young Josh who does his best to keep the family from completely falling apart. With all that is going on in the film, from the sickness to the family quarrels there is a lot of tension and drama around but first time Writer/Director, Marc Meyers does a terrific job telling the story and handling the delicate situations with just the right amount of humanity and sensitivity while inserting some lighter moments as well, this is one Director I am going to be on the look-out for. The ensemble cast is another reason to love the film, every one in the film does a wonderful job playing out their characters but to me the two highlights were Robert Loggia who plays Siv, stricken with cancer while attempting to take care of his wife, Loggia is one of the most under-rated actors around and he gives a magnificent performance here. The other stand-out is Jack Carpenter who plays Josh, this is a very talented young actor who I see gooing places.
"Harvest" is one of the best movies of the year and if you didn't have the chance to see it during it's limited theatrical run you owe it to yourself to check it out now. This is an extraordinary film about the ordinary things we have all gone through at some point in our lives. I was touched, I laughed and some how among all the sadness and drama I was able to smile as well. I can't recommend seeing "Harvest" enough. It's a strong reminder of why you started loving cinema in the first place. The DVD comes with Bonus Features that include:
