When a young family moves into the famously haunted Winchester House, a wildly sprawling mansion built by an eccentric heiress, they begin to wonder if the tales of spooks and ghosts roaming the halls may actually be true. But all their doubts are erased when an evil spirit takes their own daughter captive.
Loosely based off the The Winchester Mystery House is a well-known California mansion that was under construction continuously for 38 years, and is reported to be haunted. For starters let me say I am happy to see The Asylum do another horror film even if it isn't like the gore fests they have made in the pass. The film is about a couple and their daughter who move into The Winchester Mansion as caretakers but soon after creepy things being happening to their daughter and after she is taken by the ghosts that haunt the mansion they must try and figure out what it is they want in order to get their daughter back. It is all pretty straight forward and not much different than any other spooky haunted house film but that doesn't mean this isn't an good and effective flick. Director Mark Atkins has been behind the camera on a handful of other movies for The Asylum and has always done a fine job so I was looking forward to seeing what he could do with this sort of film. In the "Making Of" Mark says they used practical methods to get the effects they wanted and I think over-all they were very effective at doing so. The film does have some scary moments to it and the story if simple is still interesting enough to keep you engaged. The cast all did a fine job playing out their characters and what I thought really made the film was the twist at the end. I have to admit I never seen it coming but there were hints during the film as I found out at the end. This was a nice production that is very well done and it has enough "jump" moments to make for a good film to pop in on Halloween night. The film was shot in both 2D and 3D, sadly my copy did not come with the needed 3D glasses so I was stuck watching it in 2D till I can find a pair to use so I cannot comment on how effective the 3D version of the film is which shows in my rating as it could of been a bit higher if I had watched the 3D version. but I do like the idea of doing them this way and hope to see them do more in both formats in the future. If you enjoy a spooky film then I recommend picking this up, I found to be pretty entertaining and one of the better films The Asylum has put out recently.
