"Havana 57" centers on Rubén Vélez, a young Detective who wants to play it straight when the entire Police force is corrupt. When he witnesses the killing of a young student by his partner he is told to either play along or suffer the consequences but when a young woman is found dead and the Police again try to cover it up Rubén Vélez begins digging for the truth which becomes a dangerous game for everyone involved including himself.

The film takes place in Havana, Cuba 1957 and it does an amazing job recreating the era and look of the time, everything from the cars to the way people dressed was very impressive. The story is a crime drama that follows this young Detective who just wants to uphold the law but the times make it pretty difficult because everyone is on the take in one way or another. There is a lot going on in the film which involves many different characters but Director, Jim Purdy does a great job at telling his story and keeping everything in line while making the film engaging at the same time.

Another big part of the film's success is its cast, Juan Riedinger is mesmerizing as Detective, Rubén Vélez but he is not alone. Everyone in the film did a terrific job playing this complex, multi-layered characters including, Elisabetta Fantone, Paulino Nunes and the rest of the supporting cast. I already mentioned how well the film recreated the era but I would also like to add how well the film looks. The cinematography is fantastic and the sound is spot on as well
