The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Clémentine Poidatz (Shut In), David Sakurai (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Alicia Kapudag (The Two Faces of January), Ali Aksöz (“Medcezir”), and Defne Halman (“Içerde”)
Holly (Poidatz) has been haunted by a horrific childhood trauma for twenty years and struggles with vivid, disturbing nightmares that leave her detached and unable to live a normal life. Then an old friend recommends Holly meet with charismatic cult leader Bruce O’Hara (Sakurai), and she is led on a twisted journey of waking dreams that will begin to unravel the fabric of reality and reveal the truth about Holly’s family… a terrifying destiny.
'Housewife' tells the story of Holly who as a little girl had to witness her mother killing her sister and her father. Now grown Holly has all kinds of problems including nightmares and daydreams about what happened back then. When she meets Bruce O' Hara, a cult leader she thinks he might be able to help her finally escape her horrible past but soon things take an even more bizarre turn.
If you have seen Director, Can Evrenol's 2015 film, "Baskin" then you know the type of dreamlike films he can make. His newest film has all the same trademarks that made "Baskin" so unique. I am not going to go into major plot details here simply because a lot of what happens makes little to no sense. The film offers up a lot of questions but doesn't deliver any answers to any of them.
The film has a terrific blood soaked opening but after it switches to when Holly is a damaged adult who is now married it becomes a weird, mystery-filled gore fest and it has lots of unexplained moments in it. There are parts of the movie you will really like and then there are other parts that leave you scratching your head.
I have seen some reviews that mention that the acting is bad. I didn't really see that myself and thought Clémentine Poidatz stood out and gave an excellent performance as Holly. If there is one thing that Director, Can Evrenol has going for him it's his ability to create a film that gets the audience thinking. 'Housewife' is a strange, disturbing and twisted film that has one of the most bizarre endings I have seen in some time.
The film will be available on VOD, Digital and DVD on October 2, 2018. If you are a fan of horror and are looking for something different then check this one out but if you like your horror mainstream then I suggest you pass on this one. The film wasn't perfect but overall I enjoyed its weirdness and its gore.
