A mysterious cult has decided to take a new direction in giving Victor, a hard working trusted member, a promotion. However, his cruel minded disciples have decided to take action of their own. Growing tired of their monotonous plans, they begin to take their malevolent acts one step further. In a world seemingly far removed from Victor's, two young girls, Annabel and Tina, are trying to make changes in their own lives. Annabel prepares for a second date with Jerry, a man she met online, while Tina keeps focused on an important meeting that is sure to open up new doors in her life. Soon these two worlds collide as Annabel and Tina find themselves deep within the belly of the beast, and the long, dark history of a secret organization is revealed.
The above pretty much tells it all without giving away the major details. Writer/Director, Christopher Di Nunzio was kind enough to offer me a copy of his film and from the details I got from him I was looking forward to something different and that was exactly what I got. You can call Livestock a horror film if you want to be that vague about it but it is much more than that. The film has a great opening sequence that grabs your attention right out of the gate. It starts off as a mob film, a group of gangsters who are concerned about a man who is running for office, this man knows too much about their secret pack and the gang is afraid he might use that to his advantage so they pay the man a visit to..well silence him you might say. From there the begins to tell the tale of this mob gang whose secret is to be kept regardless of the circumstances. There are several reasons why I found this to be an enjoyable film, one is cast. For unknowns the entire cast I felt did a terrific job playing out their characters and making them believable. Also the story is smart and clever and it is told in a way that captivates and keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what this group is really up to, the story is about as original as you are going to see today. This is one of those films that the more you tell about it the more plot details you end up giving away which is why I am being very careful here. I can tell you that for a film made on a micro-budget Christopher Di Nunzio did a fantastic job directing and keeping the film moving at brisk pace, you can tell this was a labor of love by all involved. The film makes up for flaws or imperfections it might have because by delivering a good that captures your attention and keeps till the shocking end. The film does have a few flaws like any big budget film has but it has some things Hollywood horror never has, for one it has a story that is interesting and characters that are thought-out, how many new horror films can you say that about? Livestock isn't really a horror film, at least not in the traditional sense. There is some gore and violence but it is used to help tell the story and not just for shock value. I got to tell you I really enjoyed this movie, more than I expected to be honest. From the opening scenes I was taken in by the story and always wanted to know more, to know what this group of gangsters were up to, what their secret was. If you are like most people including myself and yearn for a film that is different from the rest then I highly recommend picking this up when it hits DVD on November 10th. I found Livestock to be both captivating and highly entertaining, after the shocking conclusion when the credits began to roll all I wanted was more, maybe a sequel in the works?
