David (Academy Award Winner Gary Oldman) is a struggling blue-collar captain looking to make a better life for his family. Strangely drawn to an abandoned ship that is up for auction, David impulsively buys the boat, believing it will be his family’s ticket to happiness and prosperity. But soon after they embark on their maiden journey, strange and frightening events begin to terrorize David and his family, causing them to turn on one another and doubt their own sanity. With tensions high, the ship drifts off course, and it becomes horrifyingly clear that they are being lured to an even greater evil out at sea.

'Mary' tells the story of David and Sarah. They have two girls together and are trying to piece their broken marriage back together. David who works for someone else as a sea captain has dreams of making a better life for him and his family. He things he finds that missing piece when he spots an old rundown boat that was abandoned at sea up for auction. No one really seems to know the ship's history but David is some how drawn to its rustic beauty and buys it anyway.

Sarah is upset at first because the boat is old and needs a lot of work but she eventually comes around to the idea. After fixing the boat up and getting it sea worthy the four of them and two deck hands set out on the ship's maiden voyage. But it is not long before strange things begin happening and some on board begin acting out in a violent way. Now they must fight to stay alive while under attack from something that is pure evil.

'Mary' is a ghost ship horror flick from Director, Michael Goi and Writer, Anthony Jaswinski. I am not going to go into any more plot details here so not to ruin the film for those wanting to see it. The film is well made with beautiful scenery of the ocean and islands. The film does not have all that many special effects in it but the ones that are in the film are well done.

Since the film takes place on a boat it relies on some jump scares a long the way to scare its audience and for the most part they are effective. I enjoyed the film and I thought it had its moments but I also felt the writing could have been a bit better. In the end I felt story wise it was about average but I also felt the cast lifted the film up a bit.

Any film would get a lift having Academy Award winner Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer in it. Oldman is his usual stellar self and Mortimer gives another strong performance. The supporting cast which includes Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Stefanie Scott, Chloe Perrin, Douglas Urbanski and Jennifer Esposito all gave solid performances as well.

RLJE Films will release the horror / thriller, MARY on DVD and Blu-ray on November 26, 2019. If you like horror check this one out it is entertaining and it has enough frightening moments you keep you at the edge of your seat and engaged plus it is worth a watch for the cast alone.
