When straitlaced recent divorcée Alice Washington returns to Smith College to complete the coursework she began years before, her plans for a dignified college career vanish when she meets her wild child roommate, Zoe. With Zoe's help, Alice learns to loosen up, but she may go too far when she ponders a verboten relationship with her poetry professor.
Mrs. Washington Goes to Smith is similar to almost any film you might of see on the Hallmark Channel. After her husband leaves her for a younger woman, Alice Washington a middle aged mother of two decides to complete her college education at Smith College. She and her 20 year old room mate Zoe Burns share their experiences, conflicts and interest in their poetry professor. The film is a tribute of sorts to all those who have gone back to school later in life for one reason or another but it's done in a light, humorous and romantic way. The film a new twist to the old movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." I don't normally like remakes but this is done in a refreshing and fun way so I couldn't help but like it. When Alice first arrives she is given Zoe, a wild girl as her new roommate. You might think these two would have a hard time getting along but in time they warm up to each other and Zoe does a little growing up in the process. Cybil Shepperd is an old pro by now and she pretty much steals every scene she is in but the entire cast does an excellent job as well at playing their roles.
Mrs. Washington Goes to Smith is pretty much cliché but the problems displayed in the film are real ones that many people face everyday. If you give the film a chance you are going to find it to be touching, funny and just plain entertaining. I enjoyed the film much more than I expected and I recommend it to everyone that is looking for a something light yet fun, the performances here certainly didn't hurt but everything combined made this one of the better Television films I have seen in awhile.
