n 1979, architect Gabriel (Timothy Hutton) begins questioning his existence, avoiding work and escaping into the fictional world of movies. When he starts writing a play examining the choices he's made, it creates issues with his wife (Dana Delany), daughter (India Ennenga) and friends. Timothy Hutton is one the most unrated actors in Hollywood, here he gives a great performance as a self indulgent, self analytical architect, who begins to question his life as he sinks deep into a midlife crisis. Dana Delaney plays his long time suffering wife who tries to understand his sudden obsession with play writing as he puts on paper all the inner turmoil within himself and the turmoil it has caused his family. The film also stars Stockard Channing who plays his agent who supports and understands what he is going through. Channing is fantastic in her role but it is limited, I kept hoping she would get more screen time because she is certainly one of the film's highlights. I found the film to be a lot like the films Woody Allen use to make, it is talky but there are some lighter, funnier moments in the film as well. The acting is solid all the way around and the story is engaging and thought-provoking, a story about someone looking for happiness in their lives we can all relate to. Multiple Sarcasms isn't going to be a film that everyone will like but those of you looking for something different and with meaning are going to want to check it out, it is a nice change of pace that I found enjoyable.
