Daniel, a pizza delivery guy by trade, who, after breaking up with his longtime girlfriend, accidentally summons God to his side to help him cope with the ordeal. But this is no ordinary God; he's a foul-mouthed, over-sexed "buddy God" that Daniel can relate to; and play golf with. But despite God's help, Daniel continues to sleepwalk through life until a chance encounter with Beth, a cultured, carefree soul and old grade school classmate, has Daniel beginning to believe that there is much more to life than ex-girlfriends. But when a secret from Beth's recent past surfaces, Daniel must choose between what feels familiar or what feels right.
There's never a shortage of comedies to watch anymore but it is always nice to see one that is smartly written and just plain fun. Of God and Golf is one those films, an Independent film from Co-writer and Director, Ryan Mains. By now it must be hard coming up with material to make a comedy that has any kind of freshness to it if not originality but Ryan has done that here. The films deals with relationships or the lack there of so it does have something to offer the girls but it is foremost a comedy and a hilarious one at that. One of the reasons the film works so well is because it is perfectly cast, the two main male leads, Michael Teigen and Kristian Ayre share great chemistry together and play off each other perfectly and it doesn't hurt that lines are both funny and smart. Michael steals the show as the foul-mouthed God looking for hot chicks and the next big party to go to. There comes a point when Daniel just wishes he never asked for help in the first place, it really is a great twist on some of the past comedies that dealt with pretty much the same situation. The jokes come fast and often when the two are together on screen and even though it all might seem offensive to some the humor is simply flawless. There's one scene when God is thinking back to his inspiration while designing the female genitalia and it is a classic scene that will have you rolling on the floor in laughter. It seems the film only got to play at a handful of Festivals, that is too bad with a little more push I think this could of really found an audience. Ryan Mains has worked in the industry for years and has done a few shorts as well but this is his first feature film and I hope not his last because he has a great eye for comedy and his direction is spot on. If you like your comedy with a little bite I suggest keeping an eye out for this one when it comes out on DVD in the near future. I watched this twice and got to say I enjoyed it better the second time around, crude yet hysterical with a cast to die for and cleverly written makes this one comedy people will be talking about.
