A group of teenagers travel to a remote island and precede to be knocked off one by one by a unseen monster.
Slaughter Island is a low-budget Japanese slasher flick that is pretty much by the book so what you see is what you get here, the film could of better but it turned out to be much more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. As the film opens you see a woman in a bikini being chased, you never see the person who is doing the chasing but it sets the stage for the rest of the film and is actually a good start. You now see a group of ten friends ready to party on the same beach and it doesn't take long for them to start being killed off one by one. For those still alive hope is all lost when their boat disappears and no one was informed where they were going so there will be no rescue team coming. Whoever or whatever is doing the killing is left a mystery during the film and the killings themselves are mostly off camera with the carnage after being seen. This is more effective than it might seem as it creates a good sense of dread and mystery, it's not enough to already be stranded on a beach in the middle of nowhere but not knowing who or what is doing the killing becomes very suspenseful as the film moves along. Director Hisaaki Nagaota does a good job making a creepy horror flick with little to work with, the cast is very good at their roles and are all attractive and running around in bikinis which certainly is nice on the eyes. As far as character development goes there really is none to speak of but again this is a straight forward slasher film so you really don't need to know much about them since most or all of them are not going to last the run time of the film anyways. Speaking of run time the short 83 minutes works great here and the film doesn't waste a minute of it on useless subplots or gimmicks. To go into what happens in the film would only ruin it for those wanting to see see it so I will remain silent and let those of you see they film and make your own judgement.
Slaughter Island isn't the best Slasher film ever made but for what it is it works, I found it to be a fun and entertaining film that took a small idea and made the most of it. The DVD comes in it's original Japanese Language with English Subtitles. It also contains Special Features that include:
