After being separated from his twin brother as a child, Tae-soo (Jin-hee Ji) grows up to be a gangster assassin -- but that doesn't stop him from continuing to search for his long-lost brother, Tae-jin (also played by Ji), who's now a policeman. Tae-soo finally locates his sibling, only to witness his brutal execution. After hiding his brother's body, Tae-soo assumes his identity and begins his quest for revenge against the killer.
As far as modern day action/thrillers go I have always felt the Koreans made the best of them out of all the Asian countries. There's just something about their movies, the grit and realism of their fight scenes, their style that just give them an edge over all the others, "Oldboy" is an example of that. I was eager to watch Soo since I figured it might be similar in style, now don't get me wrong it is no match for "Oldboy" but it does have some good things going for it. If the film has any flaws they are in it's story, there are a few plot holes that could of been covered and not left open because they do leave you scratching your head over them. Also the editing could of a been a bit better in spots to give the film a little better pace but in a film such as this they are minor details and don't take away from the over-all enjoyment. Now in a revenge film like this the post important part has to be the action scenes and and they are raw,exciting and brutal as well as being nicely choreographed. Soo is a gritty action film where the lines are blurred between good guy and bad, it seems everyone in the film has a past of some sort but you still root for the lead even though you know he isn't 100% innocent either. The lead uses a lot of mixed martial arts and his favorite weapon is a knife so even if the story itself falls short the action and grit the film brings makes it an entertaining ride. If you are a fan of Korean cinema or Asian films in general then I recommend picking this one up. Also fan's of action in general should enjoy this one as long as reading subtitles are not a bother to you. I enjoyed this film and felt the fight scenes, cinematography and acting more than made up for the stories flaws.
