Nikki (Ashton Kutcher) has made a career out of targeting older women and using them for anything and everything … in exchange for a little sex. But the player gets played when he meets Heather (Margarita Levieva), a pretty waitress who knows every trick. Before Heather came along, Nikki had a foolproof arrangement with Samantha (Anne Heche), a successful attorney who was happy being "friends with benefits." But now he might actually be in love.
Spread is a Independent film with big budget stars at least that is how I seen it. It is a character driven drama about a man who uses his good looks and charm to get a free ride from beautiful and rich women. This isn't a role Kutcher normally plays in his films so I wasn't sure if he would even be able to pull this off but I felt he did a fine job considered he has to carry the film for the most part. The story starts off simple enough but as it moves along it gets a little more complex as Nikki falls in love with a another girl who isn't willing to fall for his tricks and as the tables turn he attempts to go back to his old live-in girlfriend but she too is already over him. The performances are all very good here but the highlights have to be Kutcher who does a great job at bringing humanity to his character and also to Anne Heche, this woman is very sexy and even if the character she plays is one you can't really get attached to she still does a fine job. The rest of the cast and characters vary, some of them could of been left out of the story and others I thought could of had their characters explored a little more. Spread is labeled as a comedy but I didn't find the film to be all that funny, some parts were amusing but in the end I would label it more a drama. Still it provides a nice escape if your looking for something different and what I mean by different is it doesn't really follow the "Hollywood" formula for these kind of films and instead has it's own original ideas and the ending is not about happiness or tragedy instead it's about bitterness, shame and folded 5-dollar note in the hand which I thought gave it a much needed realistic feel. This isn't going to be for everyone for for those curious about Kutcher playing such a role or anyone that is looking to watch an adult drama for a change might want to give this one a shot.
