The film traces the evolution of this award-winning outreach program developed by Kazi, a formerly homeless teenager turned youth mentor. After four years of collaboration, the group produced a powerful and thought-provoking album that provides a revealing look at their lives. In contrast to all the negative attention focused on hip hop and rap music, this is a story of hope, healing and the realization of dreams.
This is an uplifting film on so many levels, a hip-hop film but it is also a film that everyone can relate to because it is about the universal theme of over-coming obstacles in your life and also it is about reaching out to help others in need as well. You get to watch these young people as some over come their great obstacles while others just cope with them. You also become a part of the film as you quickly become involved in their lives and as you begin to care for them all. It is a wonderful feeling watching them grow up and mature as well as gain wisdom from the mistakes and problems they all have. Some of these young teens become very good artists by the time the film ends as well. Bruce Willis and Queen Latifah were executive producers on the film which again shows just how universal the main theme here is. The film does deal with hip hop music but the real reason to watch it is to see how these teens take the chance to not only face their problems and over come them but also how they reach out to help others as well. This is a film we can all relate to in some way and it is one of the most inspiring and uplifting movies I have seen in some time. I highly recommend picking this one up today, it is a wonderful film that tells a great story, in a time when all we see and read is bad news on a daily basis it is nice to see that positive things are happening all around us as well.
