Abner is trapped in the rough life of Mexico City. His escape? Boxing. Dr. Frank Irwin (Martin Sheen) and his son Jimmy, a pro boxer, come together to teach Abner that the heart fuels the punches we throw in life.
This is the second sports themed film I reviewed this week and it is also the second one that ended up being much more than I expected it to be. Abner is young street fighter in Mexico who is has a big heart but is a little short on skills. He is also escape his abusive father. He is rescued from the streets by a Doctor and his son who is a pro boxer that is past his prime together they teach Abner the ways of the ring and along the way they three of them learn some life lessons as well. The cast here is terrific, it is nice to see Martin Sheen again and he is fantastic in his role was the Doctor/father, also Michael Madsen is very good as well in the film and Alex Perea does a fantastic job as the kid they discover on the streets. For an Independent film shot on location in Mexico in a month's time the look is very realistic, the amazing camera work gives the film an almost documentary feel and the shots of the streets of Mexico are both beautiful and gritty. The fights scenes in the film are well done, giving them a realistic feel as well. I am not going to spoil how the film turns out here but I recommend it to anyone looking for a solid drama that leaves a lasting impression.
I highly recommend this Independent gem, given the chance I think you are going to find it to be a highly entertaining film that delivers on action as well as on heart, it is not often you stumble upon a film like this so be sure to check it out. You can order the DVD HERE.
