When a couple are taken hostage in their home by an intruder, a simple home invasion/robbery turns into something much more complicated. The wife may, or may not know the intruder; and the intruder may, or may not have previously crossed paths with the husband. Can a couple survive once they have been exposed to each other for who (and for what) they really are? Is the intruder actually there just to rob them? What are they each trying to hide from him and from each other?
The Truth is a captivating thriller filled with mystery,suspense and everyone seems to have secrets that lie just beneath the surface. The film takes place in a house and mainly in one room most of the time but the setting fits the story perfectly. There are many twists and turns in the film and Writer/Director, Ryan Barton-Grimley does a great job at keeping the tension high as well as hiding the secrets until the right moment to reveal them without confusing the audience. If that isn't impressive enough this being Ryan's debut as both a Writer and Director makes it that much more amazing. I think and hope we are going to see a lot more from this new talent. The well-written story is one reason this film is so good but the cast is another big reason the film is so successful and I don't think they could of found a better ensemble cast to play these roles. John Heard and Erin Cardillo are terrific as the husband and wife who find their home invaded and then beaten and tied up by a man that at first seems to have no motive other than to rob them. Brendan Sexton III is also very good as the man who breaks in to their home, he does a fantastic job playing a man with loads of anger inside, as the movie moves along and secrets are revealed you understand what his motives were and you find out he was a victim long as a child. Also it is nice to see Daniel Baldwin in another film, his role is relatively small but his character is important to the story. The Truth is one of those movies that the less you know about it the better, this is a taut thriller that is as suspenseful as it is captivating and it had me on the edge of my seat wanted to know the answers. The use of flashbacks to tie up the loose ends works very well here without making the story confusing. If you like a good thriller The Truth is one movie you are not going to want to miss. I really enjoyed this and look forward to seeing more work from everyone involved including this talented new Director that certainly has a great eye for the genre.
