While at a friday-night party celebrating two things: the long and distinguished career of Edward Roth Hutton, senior partner of the very successful Hutton Enterprises; and the companys landing of a very important contract, engineered and negotiated by Huttons junior partner, Ty MacArthur. We learn at the party that far from being a loyal partner, Ty is not only sleeping with Huttons wife, Margot Schugart Hutton, but also conspiring with Margot and a shadowy compatriot, Liam, to murder his boss and mentor, Edward.
Trapped is new age film noir, filmed in my home town and on a very small budget the film easily over comes it's flaws by having a clever script and some very interesting characters. In typical "Fargo" tradition the film has a murder gone wrong story that plays out like a black comedy, sure their are killings and the usual suspects and there's lies and deceit but there is also a few good laughs along the way as well. The laughs come mostly from the wonderful and clever script that was written by Ron Hankison and Gavin Rapp who also directed the film together. The cast is mostly made up of local talent, the only big Hollywood face you are going to recognize is Corbin Bersen but the cast does a really good job playing their characters. Like I said this is a local film and the filmmakers did a terrific job taking advantage of the locations. The story keeps you interested and waiting to see what happens next or what goes wrong next in this case. Also the ending is a real shocker and it's one those you never see coming. Trapped isn't without it's flaws but it manages to rise above most of them to become a pretty entertaining crime film. I look forward to seeing more work from this local production company and the talented young cast as well.
If you like the genre I would recommend giving this one a look at, the story keeps you watching and the characters are all interesting enough to care about in one way or another. This was a great job by Winter Morning Pictures and everyone involved, it seemed like a labor of love and it translates well back to the audience. You can order the DVD HERE.
